DR GERHARD PIENAAR
FELLOWSHIP TRAINED HIP AND KNEE SURGERY
Upon obtaining his medical degree at Stellenbosch University in 2006, Dr Gerhard Pienaar completed his internship at Witbank Hospital in Mpumalanga and proceeded to do community service in the Orthopaedic Department of Worcester Hospital, Western Cape. Dr Pienaar was then appointed as a Medical Officer of this very same department in 2010.
With a passion for orthopaedics, Dr Pienaar then began his Registrarship through the University of Stellenbosch at Tygerberg Hospital in 2011. During this time, he also pursued his Master's degree, with his dissertation on PET/CT scans as a modality for the evaluation of persisting raised infective parameters in patients treated for TB spine.
Eager to acquire knowledge and skills in limb reconstruction and joint replacements, Dr Pienaar attended various orthopaedic courses held in Cape Town, covering limb reconstruction and deformity correction, joint reconstruction, as well as pelvic reconstruction and hip surgery.
Upon completion of his specialisation in Orthopaedics from the Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa: FC Orth(SA) in 2016, as well as his master's degree in 2017, Dr Pienaar began his SAOA accredited Fellowship in Limb reconstruction at Tygerberg Hospital, under Professor Nando Ferreira. He then remained at Tygerberg Hospital while completing his Fellowship in Hip & Knee Arthroplasty, under the guidance of Dr Koos Jordaan
With his speciality in Orthopaedic Surgery of the lower limb, knee and hip joint, Dr Gerhard Pienaar has been in private practice since and currently practices from Stellenbosch Mediclinic as well as Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital/IOR. While he performs surgery for degeneration and trauma of the hip, knee and lower limb, Dr Pienaar's niche lies joint replacement, arthroscopy as well as management of sports injuries and trauma. He makes use of 3D printed models to plan and simulate complex surgeries and takes a patient-centred approach to care, ensuring the best for the individual patient. Dr Pienaar also specialises in limb deformity correction and provides osseointegration surgery for amputees.
